Hybrid Art: Seeing what is not apparent.

Hybrid Art is a contemporary art movement. Artists work with emerging technologies, sciences, and the various art forms to create new ways of expression. Biology, robotics, physical sciences, experimental interface technologies (such as speech, gesture, face recognition ), artificial intelligence, and information visualization are all open to experimentation, trial and error. Artificial Intelligence presents new challenges: We create by words, but who defines the words, and what are the biases contained in them?

I start with an original photograph and from there I apply digital manipulations to depart from what is apparent to what may lie underneath. For example, color reflected from an object is a mixture of the visible spectrum. What if I narrow the spectrum, what colors appear? (See my photograph Lichens.) Sometimes it is just the way I recall seeing the subject. Perhaps the details make way for broad areas of color and tone. Sometimes by applying digital technology I can concentrate the visible colors and bring out color and details that were always present, but were at first invisible.

Hybrid Art is takes advantage of tools that are available today that were not only a few years ago. It will continue to advance as new technologies arise.
